Pliny the Elder
(23 - 79 AD)
Pliny the Elder is probably the last gardener that comes to mind when referring to great gardeners. But in "Who's Who" he definitely has a place.
His real name was Gaius Plinius Secundus and in many references was a roman scholar. He studied in the fields of history, military tactics, and natural science.
He is remembered because he wrote 37 books - encyclopedia of natural science. An accomplishment unheard of for years to come. Information which is still referred to.
Unfortunately he met his death by trying to observe the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.
Sometimes grim references are made to this accomplished man of his time.
