Search Engine for Gardeners

OmniSeedSearch.com is a new search engine built just for gardeners which offers two main search options: the ability to search 170 online seed catalogs, and the option to search 500 informative gardening websites for advice, tips and how to information.

OmniSeedSearch.com is a subject specific search, also called a vertical search engine, that limits the sites it indexes to only relevant, non-spam websites. Unlike general search engines, vertical search engines can "weed out" the bad websites from the good, since the bad are never included in the search index.

Both search options included a wide range of websites. The seed search option offers results from online seed sellers for fruits, flowers, herbs, vegetables, trees, grass, cacti and more. The garden knowledge search option included approximatley 200 flower and plant websites, 200 broad and subject specific vegetable websites, over 50 university extension websites, and 50 fruit, and nut websites.

OmniSeedSearch.com was developed by the founder of OmniMedicalSearch.com, a medical search engine that receives approximately 400,000 unique visitors a month, who is also an amateur vegetable gardening enthusiast.

"Besides seeing a need for a search engine specific to gardeners, I wanted to combine my hobby with my occupation of vertical search and web development," Founder Jason Morrow said. "There's a lot of great gardening information online, but I saw that improvements could be made in how people find that information."

OmniSeedSearch.com was built with the assistance of the Google Custom Search facility. Future developments for OmniSeedSearch.com will include a link directory to all 670 websites indexed, as well as a search option for related images.

Gardening webmasters of all types are encouraged to submit their website to OmniSeedSearch.com for inclusion in their index. Webmasters must first check to see if their website is not already listed by typing their web address, mywebsite.com, into either one of the search options.
